Fake Cake

So for this candle I have to explain something using a recipe. Momofuku Milk Bar has a recipe for their "birthday cake." I have made it, its amazing, its delicious. It tastes like every memory you ever have of birthdays, which is funny because much like this candle, it doesn' t exactly taste like cake. It tastes like the abstraction of cake. The idea of cake. They explain in the recipe that you have to be careful to use the specified fake vanilla flavoring instead of "real" bourbon and vanilla bean based vanilla extract and they are dead right. There is just something about that artificial oreo filling, dunkaroo icing, grocery store bakery sheet cake buttercream flavor that you cannot get from "natural" ingredients. This candle is all of that in olfactory form.

Smells exactly like fake cake. It doesnt smell like cake actually does, smells exacrly how youd think artificial cake smells, and its still great. Only lost a star because of the size. $20 for a 3.5 inch diameter by 1.5 inch tall candle is hard to justify.

Very sweet smelling, just like CAKE!

I was a little scared that this would smell like a typical vanilla candle, but thankfully, it doesn't. It really does smell like some vanilla cake! The buttercream and vanilla are both very present, it's a good balance of the two and they compliment each other nicely--although the honey kind of just gets lost in there, at least to me. It smells a bit like cake batter, a bit like a tub of vanilla frosting, and just a little bit like an ice cream shop, the latter of which is most pronounced when it's not actually burning. A friend of mine - who happens to have a really powerful sense of smell and is just particular about fragrances in general (mainly the sweeter ones) - commented on how good it smelled in my room, specifically how it smelled like cake, which is pretty cool!
I didn't notice anything about the actual strength of the aroma - it's what you'd expect from a candle. I just realized that the website ranks it halfway in terms of strength which is definitely accurate.

If I could complain about anything, it'd be the super weak wax pattern; it does say that the pattern varies, but mine was probably a fifth of the actual surface. Oh well, the nice shade of pink/fuschia makes up for it pretty well.

I got this as my first candle in the subscription service, and I think it's a nice introduction. I'll admit, though, I'm a little scared of getting "Launch Day" - from the sound of it, it's pretty much a remarketed version of this candle.

What can I say? Wish I could smell this candle all day, every day!
